The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
